You have probably heard about many of the benefits of soft water because, well, there are quite a few! Silky smooth hair and skin, no hard water stains or spots on dishes and surfaces, no clogged pipes and lower energy costs are a few of the reasons why people choose to invest in a water softener.

Maybe you have heard negative things about water softeners as well? Let’s take a look at water softener myths and get to the truth of it all.

Have You Heard These 6 Water Softener Myths?

Myth #1: There is Salt in Soft Water

This is a common misunderstanding. Water softeners use an ion exchange process to remove calcium and magnesium from hard water. Sodium chloride is used to wash away the calcium and magnesium. The chloride also gets washed away leaving only sodium. So, soft water does not have a salty taste because there is no salt (NaCl) in soft water, only sodium (Na).

Myth #2: Sodium in Soft Water is Unhealthy

This brings us to myth #2.  The typical amount of sodium in softened water is miniscule compared to other normal dietary sources of sodium. The added sodium shouldn’t be an issue for most healthy adults. Municipal water can have sodium as well, so if someone is on a sodium restricted diet, they should look into a reverse osmosis water filtering system for drinking water.

Myth #3: Water Softeners Purify Water

Water softeners are designed to soften water by reducing the amount of minerals in tap water. They do not filter out all contaminants. Reverse osmosis systems are a great filtration system for pure drinking water.

Myth #4: Soft Water Doesn’t Rinse Off Soap

Soft water definitely feels different on your skin! It may feel like you’re not getting the soap off, but it is actually hard water that leaves a residue on your skin. Soft water will leave you feeling silky smooth.

Myth #5: Water Softeners Waste Energy

Scale buildup from hard water will cut the efficiency and shorten the lifespan of your water heater and other appliances that use water. Water softeners benefit any household machine that uses water.

Myth #6: Water Softeners are Expensive

There is an initial investment in installing a water softener, but it will save you quite a bit in the long run! You will save on bath and cleaning products by not having to use as much to get the job done. Softened water will also extend the life of your appliances, water heater and clothing.
