Most people understand that their drinking water should not contain harmful contaminants. However, we still learn about communities suffering the effects of contaminated drinking water all too often. Lead is one of the most harmful drinking water contaminants and there are no safe levels at this time, according to the EPA. Lead poisoning is a serious threat to fetuses, infants and children. The health risks are concerning, but more awareness is on the way.

From October 25-31, we acknowledge the campaign known as Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. This is when all organizations, agencies, policy makers and individuals come together to raise awareness for childhood lead exposure and childhood lead poisoning. If we can learn more about the causes, risks and treatments, we can help create a safer environment for all children to grow up in.

Common Causes of Lead Poisoning

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than half a million children ages 1-5 in the U.S. have blood lead levels high enough to damage their health. That’s right – as many as 500,000 US children (2.5%) under 6 years have BLLs ≥5 µg/dL. How?

  • Older homes with lead paint are a leading cause. An estimated 3.6 million American homes with at least one child have significant lead paint hazards.
  • Lead from imported toys.
  • 10%-20% of childhood lead poisoning is caused by contaminated drinking water due to corroded pipes. It isn’t just older homes and plumbing, though.

How can I prevent lead in my drinking water?

Having your water tested and treated is a good step towards protecting the quality of your drinking water. This is especially important if your home’s water source is a private well. Investing in a home water filter like a  reverse osmosis system is the most effective way to prevent lead poisoning when it comes to your tap water.

We still have a long way to go in this country, but every decision we make when it comes to preventing lead poisoning in our babies and children is a step in the right direction.
