The quality of American tap water is better than many places around the globe, but that doesn’t mean we can or should take it for granted. There are places in this country where drinking water quality is concerning, unsafe and sometimes … unknown.

Some of the worst tap water in the country qualifies as such not because it is dirty, brown, smells odd or anything that is noticeable. It is what is hiding in the water that makes it so dangerous – drinking water contaminants that could threaten the health of those who consume high amounts. Without a home water filter such as a reverse osmosis system, some of the worst drinking water in the U.S. is making it right into the mouths of too many people.

What is the common issue?

There is not one clear answer. It varies from place to place. According to research, one-fourth of Americans currently receive water from a source that violates the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Safe Drinking Water Act. Violations range from inadequate testing to dangerous levels of contaminants like arsenic or lead. There is no specific location either, as these violations occur across the country, from rural counties to crowded cities.

Where is the worst tap water found?

Well, according to a blog from Purely Social, they have identified the top ten states with the worst public tap water ranked by the total number of people served with unsafe and hazardous water. Water quality is an issue for more people than you might think; between 9 million and 45 million Americans got their drinking water from a source that violated EPA standards!

If your state is listed, the purpose of this article is not to cause immediate concern. It is meant to raise awareness over water quality in this country and give you some tips on what you can do to protect your own tap water should you be more interested in doing so.
