We are very fortunate to live in a part of the world where water quality is better than other countries. Have you ever been warned when traveling abroad to not drink the tap water? While it’s true that things could be worse for our drinking water, we must continue to be vigilant about water quality.
National Water Quality Month
In 1974, the Safe Drinking Water Act was passed to protect the quality of groundwater and public water systems. Then, National Water Quality Month was founded in 2005 to help start conversations in our households and communities to ensure we all have access to safe, clean drinking water.
August is National Water Quality Month. There are thousands of factors that can have a negative effect on the quality of your local water. We thought now would be a great time to share our advice to homeowners on what you can do to improve your water quality.
What You Can Do to Improve YOUR Water Quality
- Be careful what you put down your drains. Medications, grease, pool chemicals, paint and car fluids are a few things you should not put down the drain in your home or in storm drains. Find a local hazardous waste site to dispose of these products.
- Be careful that your lawn and garden fertilizer does not have pesticides. Do not overwater your lawn and garden or the runoff could carry any fertilizer into the storm drains.
- Clean up after your pet. Animal waste is full of nitrogen which can remove oxygen from water making it unsafe for aquatic life.
- Installing a water treatment system can give you peace of mind that the water you are drinking is safe for your family!
