We often assume that our untreated tap water is safe if we cannot smell or taste anything. But what about tap water that has a cloudy appearance? While it is often no cause for alarm, there are some reasons for the discoloration that our drinking water systems can help take care of. You are often the last line of defense against drinking water contamination and other impurities. Do you have cloudy tap water? Here’s how to make it clear again!

What makes tap water cloudy?

While typically most of the reasons are harmless, they often include:

  • Air bubbles/aerated water
  • Sediment
  • Hard water minerals

Is it dangerous to drink cloudy tap water?

This is a tough question because it depends on why the tap water is cloudy. If the water has air bubbles, then it is fine to consume. You can see if this is the case yourself. Pour a glass of water and let it sit for a few minutes. If the cloudiness goes away, you have aerated water. If it does not disappear, it could be hard water or sediment. Particles of sand, dirt, and silt can end up in your tap water. It is a good idea to have your water tested if you are unsure. Once we have identified what is in your water, we can recommend the right drinking water system to you.

How do you choose the right drinking water system?

We often get questions about water softeners versus water filters. Both types of systems have a purpose. Hard water will remove hard minerals, but if you’re dealing with sediment issues, a water filter with reverse osmosis for your home may be just what you need. Water softeners are specifically designed to only remove hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium from water, while water filters are made to handle other minerals, sediments, or contaminants. (We know what you’re thinking, and although hardness minerals are a form of sediment, a water softener cannot remove all sediment from your water.)
